Mistletoe – source of nectar in the Karoo

In the Karoo, mistletoe flowers provide valuable nutrition for sun birds during winter. In this arid semi desert environment in South Africa which has few flowers, winter nesting Sunbirds flock to feed from mistletoes to suppliment their winter diet of spiders and insects with the copious nectar.
